URSA MAJOR
The Moonbear Museum © is a multi-media narrative project that is "a story told in threes". A curated collection of film, photography, artwork and creative writing form a larger whole, a story that blurs traditional rules of language and communication.
The Ursus thibetanus, also known as the Tibetan moon bear, is a species native to the Himalayas. They are omnivorous, nocturnal, small in stature and adapted to life in the trees. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified the bear as vulnerable due to habitat loss and the value of their body parts for traditional medicines.
During the mid-twentieth century the American military used live Himalayan and American black bears to test pilot ejection capsules on supersonic bombers. Their experiments included ejection at up to 45,000 feet.
Animal injuries were usually not serious but military protocol included the euthanizing of all bears afterward in order to perform autopsies. |
